The Urban Leadership Initiative
(ULI) is a program within CUBM that provides students with the fullest possible exposure to the urban communities in which they minister, serve, and live. ULI’s programs – seminars, conferences, workshops, and forums – are designed to encourage and equip students for participation in a variety of interdisciplinary and interdenominational Christian ministries, faith-based agencies, community organizations, government agencies, and businesses. ULI uses collaborations, internships, and mentoring relationships to expand the student’s education outside the classroom. Many of ULI’s programs are available to leaders who are not students at CUBM but are involved in urban leadership positions.
ULI Conference
The first Urban Leadership Conference was held in 2001. Once a year, CUBM and ULI sponsor an intensive weekend program that is part of each student’s class schedule for that term. Each conference focuses on one issue pertinent to urban ministry. These conferences are open to the public so that students may meet and associate with proven community leaders. Past conference speakers have included Dr. Bernard Franklin from the Fatherhood Initiative in Kansas City; Dr. Terrell Byrd of Palm Beach Atlantic University in West Palm Beach, Florida; Dr. Tom Fortson of Promise Keepers in Colorado Springs, Colorado; Dr. John Perkins, author of Reclaiming the Urban Family; Dr. Carl F. Ellis, Jr., author of Free at Last, and Dr. Willie Richardson of Stronghold Baptist Church in Philadelphia.

Weekend Schedule:
Thursday, October 15, 6:00 PM to 7:30
Speaker: Grace Robinson – When Robinson started her business 21 years ago, she became the first African-American woman in Western Pennsylvania to operate a State Farm Insurance agency. It wasn't easy, said Robinson, a graduate of the University of Pittsburgh and a resident of Churchill, but she stuck to her guns despite the hurdles. Yet it's her work on behalf of teens and young adults that makes her proudest. Robinson is the founder of Tomorrow's Future, a mentoring, entrepreneurial and job training program. More than 200 teens have gone through the six-week program that meets once a week after school at Point Park College. The program, which began in 1992, includes sessions on communications, business writing, dressing for success and public speaking. PNC Bank also presents a workshop on managing money.
Speaker: Rev. B. De Neice Welch – The Rev. B. De Neice Welch is a 2004 graduate from the Pittsburgh Theological Seminary, earning her Master of Divinity degree. She is currently serving as Pastor of the Bidwell Street United Presbyterian Church. She holds undergraduate degrees from Geneva College and Robert Morris University. She serves on several community interest boards including Urban Youth Action, Inc. Family Hospice and Palliative Care Center, Pittsburgh Interfaith Impact Network, and as an advisory board member for the Metro Urban Institute. She has served as the chaplain for the Neighborhood Academy, also teaching 9th and 11th grade religion. She also helps teach an introductory homiletics course at the Pittsburgh Theological Seminary. As a community minister, she sits on a committee in partnership with Councilwoman Tanya Payne and the Urban Redevelopment Authority, to produce a plan to rehab dilapidated properties in Manchester. Eliminating blighted properties will help reduce violence and make the neighborhood more attractive to the potential home buyers.
Friday, October 16, 6:00 to 7:30 PM
Speaker: Livingstone Johnson – Judge Johnson has served on the Court of Common Pleas of Allegheny county with distinction for the past 35 years. Prior to and during this time he has been active in civil rights, Boys Scouts of America (through which he received the Golden Eagle), as well as mentoring every young person who approached him for help. One of the first black officers in the newly integrated U.S. Air Force, Judge Johnson flew on 58 combat missions as a Navigator Radar Bombardier. He served his country with honor and bravery, earning the Distinguished Flying Cross and 4 Air Medals. He is an original member of the Hall of Valor at Soldiers and Sailors Memorial in Pittsburgh, PA. Judge Johnson is a graduate of Howard University and the University of Michigan Law School.
